Cuculi Presents: Âellin / Anna Ling
Friday 5 September, 7:30pm
Local independent label Cuculi Records presents a double header from two of the South West’s most vibrant and sophisticated alt-folk artists: Âellin (Bristol) and Anna Ling (Totnes).
Celebrating the releases of their respective debut albums, both songwriters invite us into their distinctive sonic worlds, accompanied by genre-bending bands who transport their songs into another realm. Circomedia’s swirling acoustic is the perfect setting to soak up the timeless folk melodies, intricate rhythms and rich vocal textures of these standout artists.
A Little About the Artists
Âellin is the project led by writer, lyricist and multi-instrumentalist Siân Magill. A burgeoning musical force in the UK experimental folk scene, Magill’s songcraft is marked by a spirit of restless exploration and curious wonder. Drawing on literary influences and rich intertextual layers, the project evokes themes of collective memory, dream states, and the unconscious realm. Expect an intricate blend of fingerstyle and jazz guitar, cello and violin strings grounded in the UK/Celtic folk and Hardanger traditions, double bass, deep sub-bass, beat-driven percussion, and an ever-shifting tapestry of augmented vocals and granular synthesis.
Anna Ling’s music invites listeners into a world where intricate folk melodies, raw storytelling, and rich harmonies converge. Based in the wild landscapes of Devon, she has honed her craft across intimate and world-class venues and festivals alike, offering songs that find the universal in the everyday. With a voice both delicate and commanding, Anna draws on the spirit of 1960s folk while weaving in a fresh, visceral edge, accompanied by klezmer-inflected clarinet, hot grounding electric bass grooves and percussion. Rooted in tradition but never bound by it, her live shows blur the line between performer and audience.
