Who We Are

Circomedia is a school for contemporary circus and physical theatre based in Bristol, England. We offer a variety of training courses and workshops that teach circus skills in the context of physical theatre, performance, and creativity. Alongside this, we also present 36 professional circus, theatre and dance shows a year.

Contemporary Circus and Physical Theatre is at the heart of everything we do, whether it’s educating the next generation of artists on our BTEC, Degree or Masters courses, presenting innovative and challenging work at our city centre venue, or engaging with members of the public through our part-time classes and community outreach projects.

Where it all started

We were founded in 1993 by Bim Mason and Helen Crocker, following the closure of Fool Time, Britain’s first professional circus school. Since 2004, we have been based in St Paul’s Church at Portland Square, Bristol, and a site in Kingswood, Bristol, which is home to the degree programme and the main office.

Our aim is to be the UK’s centre for contemporary circus research and production. We believe in creating transformational experiences that change the way people view and experience circus. We are dedicated to creating a limitless space where people can discover their physical, emotional, and creative potential.

We achieve this through:

Offering full-time education at post-16, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

A varied and dynamic performance programme featuring companies that push the boundaries of circus and physical theatre.

Classes that inspire people of all ages to discover circus skills.

Working with artists and the community to promote the liberating possibilities of circus and physical theatre.
