Ruby Lestrange – Foundation Degree Graduate 2024
What was your experience like studying at Circomedia?
Training at Circomedia allowed me to access new parts of myself I had not yet encountered. I learned that I’m stronger, more resilient, goofier, and smarter than I thought I was. The training at Circomedia is so intense and exhausting, but it is so much fun. I woke up some days and laughed to myself, thinking how glad I was that I actually ran away and joined the circus. At a time in my life where I needed structure, direction, and to figure out how to come out of my shell, I found myself in a supportive bubble where I was encouraged to play, fail, learn, and explore. I found out a lot about who I am, and I am very grateful to Circomedia for that.
Did you feel supported at Circomedia?
Circomedia has high expectations of their students. Yes, they want you to point your toes and meet a standard of strength, but more importantly they expect you to show up, to try hard, and to be supportive of one another. The maintenance of such a supportive community allows for the learning and growth of the students to happen in a healthy and more sustainable way.
The standard of treatment and mutual respect amongst the faculty and the students was so high that I was safe to communicate my questions, struggles, and triumphs as and when they came, and that made me a better artist, athlete, and performer.
What is the biggest thing you gained from your time at Circomedia?
I have gained connections through Circomedia that have shaped my life as a professional. I have been hired by people I met though being a student and I belong to a broad network of alumni who all support each other in finding work. In addition to all of the friends and connections I have made through Circomedia, I know I can always get in touch with anyone from the faculty and they will be there to answer my questions, generously give advice, and support me in my professional journey in any way they can.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining Circomedia?
I would recommend Circomedia for anyone who likes to move their body and who knows they have something to share with the world but maybe doesn’t yet know how. The work is fascinating, the days are long and fun, and the connections you make help shape the rest of your life.
